You Deserve Rest Even When You Haven’t Earned It

One of the deepest lies many of us grew up believing is that rest must be earned.
That you have to finish everything first.
That your exhaustion must be justified.
That your worthiness of rest depends on your productivity, your performance, or how much you’ve given to others.

That belief is heavy.
And it’s wrong.

What This Really Means

Rest is a basic human need — not a prize.
Your body is not a machine.
Your mind is not a workspace.
Your spirit is not a checklist.

You don’t earn rest.
You require it.

Why We Struggle With This

Many Black women grew up watching our mothers and grandmothers move nonstop — cooking, cleaning, working, praying, caring for everyone except themselves.
We internalized that pace.
We normalized that depletion.
We inherited that “I’ll rest once everything is done” mentality.

But everything is never done.

What Healing Looks Like

  • Resting before burnout

  • Taking breaks without apologizing

  • Saying “I need a moment” and meaning it

  • Giving yourself permission to slow down
